Origins & Mission

Serving the Pharmaceutical Industry, Advancing Technological Roots and Industrial Upgrading

✦ Background

During the Fourth National Science and Technology Conference in 1991 (ROC Year 80), the government resolved to establish the “Pharmaceutical Industry Technology Development Center” as a foundation. The primary objective was to support the industry in pharmaceutical R&D, strengthen the short-, mid-, and long-term technological development of Taiwan’s pharmaceutical sector, elevate overall industry standards, and achieve the goals of industrial upgrading and internationalization.

At the time, the initiative was led and planned by Chairman Liu Chiu-Sheng of a leading pharmaceutical company. The Industrial Development Bureau contributed NT$20 million, while the pharmaceutical industry raised NT$40 million, forming an initial endowment of NT$60 million. The Center was officially approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and established on January 15, 1993 (ROC Year 82).

In response to evolving industry dynamics, growing demands for improved quality of life, and rapid advancements in medical and healthcare technologies, the Center gradually expanded its scope to include R&D and advisory services for the medical device sector. To better reflect its expanded mission and services, it was officially renamed the “Pharmaceutical Industry Technology Development Center” in 2004 (ROC Year 93). Upholding its founding vision, the Center continues to serve the needs of the pharmaceutical industry while broadening its professional service portfolio. It also actively builds communication platforms among industry, government, academia, and research institutions, effectively enhancing overall technological capabilities to promote sustainable innovation, industry upgrading, and internationalization.
